Tennessee Gets Early Statement Win over Villanova

The Tennessee Volunteers showed some great meddle after losing in an exhibition game early this season. They stormed back during the early part of their schedule. They won the early season NIT tip off at Madison Square Garden, downing the number seven ranked Villanova Wildcats 78-68. Head coach Bruce Pearl is going to get sanctioned for misleading NCAA investigators. It’s time to talk about the players and not just the head coach.

Scotty Hopson scored 18 points to lead the Volunteers. Senior guard Melvin Goins scored seven of his nine points in the final 2:17 seconds to put the game out of reach. It was an impressive early showing for a solid Tennessee team. They’ve got a lot to prove, but defeating a top Big East team early gives the team a lot of confidence. Tennessee has an unblemished 5-0 record to start the season.

They have a solid non-conference schedule, with games against Pittsburgh and Memphis before starting the grueling SEC schedule. That’s when the schedule gets interesting for the Volunteers. The SEC is quickly becoming a respectable basketball conference. Florida emerged as a solid team and Kentucky is always the class of the SEC. The NCAA sanctions will weigh the team down going forward before their is a final ruling. Tennessee players need to ignore the problems around their coach and go out and play solid basketball before the SEC schedule.
