Magic Add Pieces to Championship Push

You have to give the Orlando Magic a lot of credit. They went for a complete roster overhaul this past Saturday and many wonder how it’s going to help them get back to the NBA Finals. The Magic stood pat as the Heat added LeBron James and CHris Bosh. THe Celtics also made moves to continue their dominance in the NBA Eastern Conference. Orlando added Gilbert Arenas, Jason RIchardson and Hedo Turkoglu to in an effort to keep up with the NBA’s elite franchises. Orlando sent Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Marcin Gortat, Michael Pietrus and a first round pick to acquire the three players.

Many analysts see the move as safe for Magic general manager Otis Smith. He was with the Phoenix Suns in 2007 when ARenas and Richardson showed their great potential. They now wonder if Arenas is older and doesn’t have that great finishing ability at the rim that he once had with the Wizards. The team has lost five of six games heading into this weekend’s games. They needed a change to keep up with the Heat and the Celtics, but is adding Arenas and Richardson really the answer to a championship in Orlando? Why not involved a third team and try to bring in Carmelo Anthony for a short term rental and shot at a championship.

The Magic stalwart and All Star, Dwight Howard can opt out of his contract after next season. He would be leaving $14 million on the table, so it’s hard to see him actually make the move to leave Orlando. The Magic were desperate after losing those games and watching the Celtics and Heat go on winning tears. It’s a great unknown how Arenas will impact the team. He needed a change of scenery after last s=year’s locker room incident. Maybe the Magic can finally win their first championship, it’s the great unknown.
