Oklahoma Thunder are For Real

The Oklahoma City Thunder took the Los Angeles Lakers to the brink in the early rounds of last season’s playoffs. They fought and battled before bowing to the eventual NBA Champions. This past summer, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook brought home the gold for Team USA in the FIBA World Championships. It put the Thunder on a lot of fans’ radars. Durant is quickly becoming one of the best players in the NBA. He’s averaging 29.3 points per game in this young season. Westbrook is averaging 7.3 assists and 22.3 points per game. He led the league in scoring last year and he’s learning to involve his teammates even more now. Third year power forward/center combo Jeff Green is learning how to play inside better with some of the best post players in the league. It takes more time for the bigger players to develop and they usually make huge strides in their third seasons.

The Lakers are the class of the Western Conference. The Miami Heat and Boston Celtics will continue to be the best of the East. The Thunder are quickly becoming a top team out West. The San Antonio Spurs have become an older team. The loss of Amare Stoudemire means less scoring options for the Phoenix Suns. The Thunder will make the playoffs again this year. They should be higher than eighth and could be in the top four if every one develops quickly. Look out for the Thunder, they’re a possible championship contender.
