Oden To Miss Season Again

How much better would the Portland Trailblazers be with Kevin Durant? That question will haunt Blazers fans for a long time. Greg Oden will miss this season after another micro fracture knee surgery. he hasn't played in the NBA since last December, he missed much of last season with a fractured patella. The left knee injury isn't suppose to be related to his current ailment. The first overall pick in 2007 missed his entire rookie season because of micro fracture surgery to his right knee. He's only played in 82 games over the past two seasons. He's never lived up to the number one overall pick. Durant meanwhile, has become one of the best players in the NBA, leading the league in scoring last season.

It's a wonder why Oden has had so many knee problems during his young career. Before the 07 Draft, doctors scoped the knees and reported "pristine" as a way to describe how healthy they were at the time. It's a shame. Portland already announced they wouldn't extend Oden's rookie contract. Oden will be a restricted free agent next summer, meaning the Blazers will be able to match any offer given to him. Jay Jensen, Portland's trainer, believes that Oden will make a full recovery for next season. It's unclear exactly when he'll be back, but Oden should be a quality big man.

True big men have great value in the NBA. The problem is their window to be truly dominant don't last very long. Shaq only lasted so long, but his dominant days are behind him. Yao Ming isn't healthy and his knees are starting to fail him. Oden isn't a true bust yet. He has a few years before that distinction can be bestowed upon him. He could become a great NBA big man. It's going to take a season or two for him to get their. That includes playing in 70 plus games a year but not playing a lot of minutes. He could still impact the game at only 28-30 minutes per night. Portland will always have to wonder though, what would the team be like with Kevin Durant?
