Dallas Downs Miami in Close Defensive Battle

It’s the old adage, defense wins championships. In the NBA, two of the better defensive teams squared off in Miami as the Dallas Mavericks completed a season sweep of the Heat, 98-96. The box and final score really don’t tell the tale of the contest. The Mavs did a great job on the Dwayne Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James. Only Wade finished with over 20 points, and that happened because of a three pointer at the buzzer. James only muster 19 points and 10 rebounds, but struggled early in the game and finished 6-of-17 shooting. Caron Butler did a great job of shutting down King James.

Mavs stalwart Dirk Nowitzki led all scorers with 24 points. Jason Terry was held scoreless until the fourth quarter, when it really mattered. Terry scored 19 points in the final stanza. The Mavs are now 9-1 on the road this season. They’ve won 15 of their last 16 games. They’ve always been overshadowed by Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. It’s time to take this Mavs team more seriously. They’ve always been criticized for not playing defense and trying to outscore opponents. That is not the case any longer.

Both these teams are playing the best basketball. After the first loss to the Mavs, the Heat turned it around, winning 13 games in a row. They’re going to have to face some adversity after winning all those games. Can they rally and make another impressive winning streak? They’re certainly capable of a winning streak. The Heat are one their way to becoming one of the top teams in the NBA. It’s going to be a Christmas Classic when they head to the Staples Center to take on the defending champion Lakers.
