College Basketball
Early Season Headlines

The first games of the
non-conference schedule in NCAA basketball have
started. It means there’s been some near upsets,
including a close victory for Pitt over Rhode Island.
Tennessee lost to Division II Indianapolis in a
scrimmage game, which led to a 5:30 a.m. video session
with the entire team. Head coach Bruce Pearl was
frustrated with the effort and his poor coaching that
led to the loss.
Early loses, or near misses, are good barometers to
where the program is currently positioned. Teams can
evaluate their talent when playing lesser opponents.
The underdogs take the experience to learn where its
program needs to be going forward. Rhode Island should
be encouraged about it’s showing against the number
four Panthers. Teams aren’t where they want to be
right now. They use these games as a learning
experience for freshman and coaches find out which
players will have the most impact early.
Pitt is a member of the toughest conference in college
basketball. The Big East produces some of the greatest
college basketball games in recent years. Syracuse has
been in a lot of those contests. The team lost three
starters from last year’s team. Their incoming class
will have a greater impact, teaming with the two
returning starters to be the class of the Big East. In
Queens, NY, Steve Lavin is tasked with bringing the
Red Storm back to national prominence. College
basketball started. It’s a great time to watch which
teams will make runs and the favorites for a
tournament berth. It’s never too early to start
thinking about March Madness.
